History of Downtown Sounds

The strategic focus of the Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) centers on attracting new businesses while retaining the existing base. The BID encourages economic development through the strengthening of downtown Glen Cove’s marketing activities by:
  • Developing strategic partnerships within the public and private sectors
  • Improving and maintaining security
  • Beautifying the downtown streetscape
  • Sponsoring and staging special events that build foot traffic in the downtown area

Downtown Sounds successfully appeals to a wide variety of age groups and backgrounds.
Toward that end, the BID in 1997 created its first free concert series Jazz in The Square. The event proved to be very successful. During the following years, the concert series evolved to accommodate a variety of musical styles that broadened its appeal to residents and visitors alike. Today, the event – now known as Downtown Sounds – is jointly produced through a partnership between BID and the City of Glen Cove.

The City of Glen Cove has a long history of fine musical events, which began in 1959 with the Morgan Park Summer Music Festival. And in 2009, Mayor Ralph V. Suozzi initiated the Gold Coast Jazz Festival. This year, that festival has been incorporated into Downtown Sounds, making this concert series bigger and better than ever. Going forward the partnership between the Downtown BID and the City of Glen Cove will be focused on fulfilling Mayor Suozzi’s vision of making Glen Cove the “Music Capital of the North Shore.”

Every Friday night during July and August, the downtown Village Square Plaza comes alive with music featuring New York area artists. With the sounds of jazz, rhythm and blues, rock, folk salsa and other genres filing the air, the public is able to enjoy great music while dancing and dining in our open and inviting downtown area. Many downtown businesses have found they can receive benefits beyond increased foot traffic and public awareness by becoming a sponsor of Downtown Sounds. Why not make your organization a part of this yearly fun!
